Guillaume Durey
science educator • soft matter physicist • YouTuber • engineer
Hello and welcome to my website!
I'm currently a science educator at CERN, the largest particle physics laboratory in the world, in Geneva, Switzerland. I manage the CERN-Solvay Education Programme, the digital education offer of Science Gateway, CERN's new flagship science centre. I produce an online interactive physics course on YouTube and a series of physics education videos for social media. I am also responsible for the international high-school student camps on CERN's campus. Find out more about my education work here!
Before that, I was a researcher in experimental soft matter physics and fluid dynamics, an interdisciplinary field at the intersection of physics, mechanics, chemistry, biology and engineering. As a postdoc at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, I worked on the rheology of active fluids and light-driven diffusiophoresis.
I received a Ph.D. in physics from PSL University in Paris, France. My research focused on the topology of chiral liquid crystals in spherical confinement, at the intersection between microfluidics and microscopy. I also hold a "diplôme d'ingénieur" from ESPCI in Paris, a graduate engineering school delivering advanced interdisciplinary education in physics, chemistry and biology. Find out more about my research here!
Throughout my career and education, I've always had a passion for science outreach conducted in creative ways. I created The Lutetium Project, a YouTube channel showcasing experimental research in soft matter physics with an artistic spin. It gathered close to 25 000 French- and English-speaking subscribers and a million views. Two of my videos were prized by the American Physical Society. Find out more about my outreach work here!
